APJ Abdul Kalam full name is Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam and he was popularly known as India’s “Missile Man”. APJ Abdul Kalam was India’s eleventh and first non-political president. He got this post due to his immense contribution to technology and science. He was born on 15 Oct 1931 in Dhanushkodi village in Rameshwaram, Tamil Nadu. He was born in a fisherman’s house. His full name is Doctor Abul Pakir Janeulabadin Abdul Kalam. His father’s name was Jainulabdeen. His father was from a middle-class family and he used to give his boat to fishermen on rent.
Kalam also had to struggle a lot for his education. He used to sell newspapers and save up for his school fees. He had learned discipline, honesty, and wholeheartedness from his father. His mother had extreme faith in God.
Abdul Kalam studied at Rameshwaram Elementary School for his primary studies. He pursued his B.Sc from Joseph College in 1950. He completed his diploma in aeronautical engineering in 1957 from Madras Institute of Technology (MIT). He started working as a senior scientist in 1959 at DTD&P Technology center. He led the team for prototype hovercraft. He designed a small helicopter for Indian army at the start of his career. He left the Raksha Ansusandhan in 1962 and started working for Antraishq Anusandhan of India. He was in various senior posts here between 1962 and 1982. He became the project head of first SLV 3 Rohini of India at ISRO in 1969.
Rohini was directed near the earth’s orbit successfully in 1980 under the guidance of Abdul Kalam Azad. The government of India awarded him as Padam Bhushan for this achievement. APJ always used to give the credit of his success to his mother. He used to say that his mother gave him the knowledge to understand between good and bad. He used to say that his mother had bought a small lamp for him seeing his interest in studies and with the help of it, he used to study until eleven at night. He added that if his mother had not supported him he would not have become successful.
He became the director of Raksha Anusandhan in 1982. Integrated guided missile development program was started under his guidance in 1982. He had a tremendous contribution in the launches of Agni, Prithvi, and Akash. He became the scientific counselor of defense minister and secretary of defense, research and development department in 1992. He was in this post until 1999. His name is among the famous scientists of India. He was given India’s biggest awardBharat Ratana in 1997. Later he was given Indira Gandhi award in 1998.
He was elected as their nominee by NDA of BJP in 2002 during President’s elections. Everybody supported in his favor. He took the oath to be the president on 18 July 2002. He was never associated with politics but he still attained the highest order of rank in politics. It is commendable and motivating to know how he reached the top in his career and became the president despite having a life devoid of luxuries. Many of the youths today see APJ as their ideal and mentor. His journey is the most inspirational in Indian history.
Death – He went to IIM Shillong on 27 July 2015 to give a lecture on “Creating a Livable Planet Earth.” At 6.35 pm after five minutes of his speech, he fell down. He was taken to Bethany hospital in this state. There was no movement in his pulse. He was declared dead by sudden heart ailment at 7.45 pm. His last words were for his assistant Srijan Pal Singh, “Man of comedy, are you doing well?” On 30th July, the president of farmers was buried in the earth with the respect of the whole world. Around 3, 50,000 people came in his last rites including Prime Minister of India, Teachers of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka and chief ministers of Andhra and Kerala etc.
