Guys tend to favor either barbells or dumbbells in their training. Therefore they don’t know the fact that both barbell and dumbbell are beneficial and somehow equally builds muscle.
Dumbbells and barbells are popular types of free weights. Each type of weight has particular strengths and weaknesses. If your primary goal is to build muscle mass then you don’t have to limit yourself to one type or the other. However, if you have limited resources to invest in either dumbbells or barbells, you may find one type of weight is more suitable for your particular fitness goals.
1. Natural movement than a barbell.
With dumbbells, you can move each side individually of the other, and this means that your body isn’t forced into as fixed of a position as you are with a barbell. This, in turn, allows your body to make whatever tiny adjustments it may need to make to ensure the movement is as natural.

In addition, for certain exercises (like the bench press), it has been shown that there is greater chest muscle activation with dumbbells presses compared to barbell presses. As it stabilizes muscle faster than compared to a barbell.
3. Safe to use for new
It can be said that dumbbells are a safer way to learn some of the basic movements when you’re new to weight lifting. A dumbbell bench press is easier to learn for a beginner than the barbell bench press. Same thing for shoulder presses – easier with dumbbells when you’re a beginner.

This is mostly the case with pressing exercises (bench press, incline press, overhead shoulder press, etc.).With exercises like the bench press and the military press, it is arguably easier to maintain perfect control with a barbell compared to a dumbbell.
2. Lifts More Weight
There is no doubt that you can lift more weight using barbells compared to dumbbells. If you are able to barbell bench press of 200 pounds for 5 reps, it is extremely unlikely that you’d be able to dumbbell bench press 100 pounds in each hand. Barbells are easier to use than dumbbells when the weight gets heavy.
3. Let You Progress Faster
While you can do this with both barbells and dumbbells, it is often easier to do with barbells – especially at heavier weights. This is because the smallest amount that you can increase with dumbbells is often 5 pounds for each dumbbell – meaning that the smallest progression you can do is 10 total pounds. In contrast, with barbells, you can increase by just 5 pounds, which can make it easier to steadily progress and build more muscle and strength over time.
So it is not mandatory that you choose only one. Both work equally as they contain weights, therefore you can use both of them for greater and better results.
