Dream is the involuntary succession of images, ideas, emotions and sensation that occur in the mind during certain stages of sleep. The purpose and meaning of the dream are not fully understood.
Dreams mainly occur in the Rapid Eye Movement (REM) stage of sleep. During REM sleep brain is highly active and resembles that of being awake. In REM sleep there are continuous movements of the eyes during sleep. If a person awakes during REM phase they are more likely to remember the dream. The dreams that occur during our sleep are less vivid and memorable. The length of the dream may last for a few seconds or approximately 20- 30 minutes and it may vary. In average a person has three to five dreams per night, and some may have up to seven.
Sigmund Freud was one who developed the psychological discipline of psychoanalysis. He wrote about dream theories and their interpretations in early 1900s. He said that dreams are manifestations of one’s deepest desires and anxiety, often relating to repressed childhood memories. “The Interpretations of Dreams” was the book written by him. He developed a psychological technique to interpret dreams and devised a series of guidelines. Dreams can have varying natures, such as being frightening, exiting, magical, melancholic, adventurous, or sexual. Dreams can at times be creative or give a sense of inspiration.
Types of Dreams
Based on the frequency and validity of the dreams, they are classified in to some categories. Some types of dreams and its characteristics.
Dreams keep on repeating themselves more than once and this is not something that is peculiar to some people, it happens with many people. Dreams that are repeating itself from young age then probably there is some meaning hidden in it that we have to understand or an aspect of ypur personality that you are scared to face.
These dreams are always like stories that have something reveal and is done with the help of colours, textures and detailing. The subconscious can convey the message to the conscious and it can be worked upon. Some experts say that unconscious knows that the symbolism it uses has to be repeated so that it uses has to be repeated so that the conscious mind can understand it.
Predictive dreams are the most sensitive of all since it is difficult to determine the dream that you should take as warning, consider it to be a representation of your fear and anxiety. Predictive dreams are a way of information extraction from the brain since we all have a collective base of information.
Lucid dreams are over which we have no control since most of the time we see such dreams when we are conscious enough to understand that we are dreaming. These dreams can be used to get the solution of a problem or face a fear that you have or just to have fun.
These are most negative kind of dreams that leave you weak and frightened. The best way to deal with nightmares is to face them and try to know the reason you are experiencing them. Most of the nightmares are results of repressed emotions of childhood.
